PEEK: The Pyramid of High-Performance Engineering Materials
PEEK was first developed by ICI in 1977 and is currently produced and sold by VICTREX.
PEEK, or PolyEtherEtherKetone, has many excellent properties, such as high-temperature stability, corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, insulation, and wear resistance, making it a high-performance engineering plastic. PEEK is widely used in high-demand fields such as aerospace, medical, automotive, electronics, chemical, petroleum, and natural gas. Because of its outstanding properties and wide application, PEEK is considered the “pyramid of engineering plastics” in the plastic industry. Nowadays, PEEK raw materials are also being mass-produced in China.

Introduction to PEEK Materials for CNC Machining
SINCO-CNC commonly uses four types of PEEK materials for CNC machining: Virgin PEEK, LF30-PEEK, GF30-PEEK, and CF30-PEEK.
Virgin PEEK is a material with a light brown color and no added modified fillers. It can be FDA food-grade certified and has high-temperature resistance to steam, ethanol, and Y-rays. It is commonly used in medical, food equipment, and electronic instrument applications.
LF30-PEEK is a light black-colored material that is formed by adding PTFE, graphite, and carbon fiber fillers. It has stronger wear resistance and is often used for bearing and transmission system components. Its superior friction properties, such as low friction coefficient, wear resistance, and high peak pressure limit, make it the best material for friction applications at this level.
GF30-PEEK is a material with a light brown color that is reinforced with 30% glass fiber. It has better rigidity, creep resistance, and dimensional stability than Virgin PEEK, making it ideal for manufacturing structural parts. It can withstand fixed loads for long periods at high temperatures.

CF30-PEEK is a light black-colored material that is reinforced with 30% carbon fiber. It has better mechanical properties, such as higher elastic modulus, mechanical strength, and creep resistance, and is more wear-resistant than GF30. Plastic with carbon fiber reinforcement has 3.5 times better thermal conductivity and can dissipate heat faster from the bearing surface than unreinforced Virgin PEEK plastic.
The outstanding features of PEEK

Can be used for a long time at temperatures up to 260°C.

Exhibits excellent chemical stability

Has high strength, high rigidity, and wear resistance, making it an excellent engineering plastic.

Displays high flame retardancy and is difficult to ignite or self-ignite, making it an ideal flame retardant material.
Preprocessing
Before machining PEEK material, it is necessary to anneal it to reduce internal stresses. Otherwise, the high-speed rotating tool during the machining process may cause warping and deformation of the PEEK material. We recommend annealing at the following temperature and time: slowly heat the material to 150°C, hold for 2-3 hours, then heat up to 200°C and hold for 4 hours, and finally let it cool naturally. This can reduce internal stresses and improve the machinability of the material.

Tool selection
For different PEEK materials, we need to use different tools. For pure PEEK material, we recommend using hard alloy tools for machining. For LF30-PEEK, GF30-PEEK, and CF30-PEEK materials with modifications, we recommend using PCD alloy tools for machining to ensure better machining results and longer tool life.
Use of cutting fluid
Cutting fluid can help cool and lubricate the tool and improve chip removal capacity during high-speed machining. When machining industrial parts, we can choose ordinary cutting fluid for machining. However, when machining medical-grade PEEK, we need to choose cutting fluids with good biocompatibility. If higher biocompatibility is required, we can use pure water or compressed air for cooling. This can ensure the biocompatibility and quality of PEEK products.

The Key Advantage of PEEK Material

PEEK material has many advantages. Firstly, it has excellent chemical resistance, so it can withstand the erosion of many strong acids, alkalis, and solvents. Secondly, its moisture absorption is very low, so it can maintain its physical properties even in high humidity environments. In addition, PEEK material also has wear resistance, so it can be used in high-friction environments. It also will not be affected by continuous exposure to hot water or steam, so it can be used in high-temperature environments. Moreover, certain grades of PEEK material have biocompatibility, which can be applied in medical and biological science fields. Finally, PEEK material also has resistance to biodegradation, so it can be used in applications that require long-term use.
Expansion Industries for PEEK CNC Machining

PEEK plastic material, with its characteristics of lightweight, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and high strength, has been widely used in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles.
In the structural design of drones, PEEK can be used to manufacture core components such as connectors, transmission devices, and energy storage device casings, which can greatly improve the flight efficiency and stability of unmanned aerial vehicles. Compared with other metal materials, PEEK can reduce the weight by 2-3 times, while the material can withstand ultra-high temperatures up to 260°C, which enables it to have longer endurance in complex environments.

In automotive manufacturing, PEEK can be used to produce high-temperature and high-pressure components such as engine covers, exhaust systems, and turbochargers. In addition, PEEK can also be used to manufacture critical components such as hydraulic pumps, clutches, transmission gears, and brake systems because of its ability to withstand high temperatures, high pressures, and chemical corrosion.

PEEK also plays an important role in the medical field. PEEK materials have many excellent properties, such as outstanding biocompatibility, chemical resistance, and mechanical performance, making it widely used in medical devices and orthopedic implants.
PEEK materials are commonly used in various surgical instruments, dental instruments, and orthopedic devices. Its high strength and light weight, combined with excellent chemical stability and biocompatibility, make it favored in the medical industry.
